Good evening friends, today, we are exploring – The School of the Holy Spirit – 49 of 52 – Part 37 – The Last Words from an old dying man are critically important to the extent that we need to pay attention by Reading, Listening, Learning and Applying them as situation demands of us – We share these words in today’s post + Counseling Self and Others Concerning Matters of Deception and Dishonesty
Brethren, the last words of a dying old man matter a lot. I know this as a fact because my dad, in the last 2 of the 3 months of his life was spent within my house and the hospital as we tried all within our power so he can recover from a terminal illness. It was in those moments, late at night that He began to whisper to me the story behind my birth and several events after that.
Those moments became an aha moment for me in my lives journey. It helped me reconcile my life experiences relative to the call upon my life. I could then reconcile how I managed to survive a car summersault, a high voltage electric shock, a food poisoning, enchantments and several others that would have taken others out in a flash which I survived – I was a cat with nine lives. After my dad’s words, I realized I owed my very life and existence to God and that there was a specific call upon my life of which I was clueless as at this very point. I just knew I cannot be careless like everybody else going forward and the hunt for the specifics began in much prayer and much fasting – To whom much is given, much will be required – Luke 12:48.
When we counsel people today, we ask them to tell us about their past because the past hold a lot of clues to our present and our future, no matter how unpleasant they might seem. In God’s encounter with His people, He tells them, “I Am the God of your fathers. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – I Am, that I Am. I am the God of the past, the present and the future.” We must pay attention to the events of the past as we chart a course for the future. If there is anything humans have not learnt, it is the fact that we have learnt nothing from history- The past. We keep repeating the mistakes of the past because we forget and ignore very quickly the lessons of the past to the detriment of the now and the future.
Peter, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ wrote His final letters to the churches spread across the known world from Rome before his execution on an x cross because he knew his time was almost up. We want to explore those letters beginning from the 2 Peter 1 as we draw some comments while going along, so enjoy while paying attention, reading, listening, learning and applying them as situation demands of us.
2 Peter 1
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle (special messenger) of Jesus Christ, to those who have received (obtained an equal privilege of) like precious faith with ourselves in and through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 May grace (God’s favor) and peace (which is [a]perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and [b]freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts) be multiplied to you in [the full, personal, [c]precise, and correct] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3 For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [[d]full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).
4 By means of these He has bestowed on us His precious and exceedingly great promises, so that through them you may escape [by flight] from the moral decay (rottenness and corruption) that is in the world because of covetousness (lust and greed), and become sharers (partakers) of the divine nature.
5 For this very reason, [e]adding your diligence [to the divine promises], employ every effort in [f]exercising your faith to develop virtue (excellence, resolution, Christian energy), and in [exercising] virtue [develop] knowledge (intelligence),
6 And in [exercising] knowledge [develop] self-control, and in [exercising] self-control [develop] steadfastness (patience, endurance), and in [exercising] steadfastness [develop] godliness (piety),
7 And in [exercising] godliness [develop] brotherly affection, and in [exercising] brotherly affection [develop] Christian love.
8 For as these qualities are yours and increasingly abound in you, they will keep [you] from being idle or unfruitful unto the [[g]full personal] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
9 For whoever lacks these qualities is blind, [[h]spiritually] shortsighted, [i]seeing only what is near to him, and has become oblivious [to the fact] that he was cleansed from his old sins.
10 Because of this, brethren, be all the more solicitous and eager to make sure (to ratify, to strengthen, to make steadfast) your calling and election; for if you do this, you will never stumble or fall.
11 Thus there will be richly and abundantly provided for you entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
12 So I intend always to remind you about these things, although indeed you know them and are firm in the truth that [you] now [hold].
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle (tent, body), to stir you up by way of remembrance,
14 Since I know that the laying aside of this body of mine will come speedily, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
15 Moreover, I will diligently endeavor [to see to it] that [even] after my departure (decease) you may be able at all times to call these things to mind.
16 For we were not following cleverly devised stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty (grandeur, authority of sovereign power).
17 For when He was invested with honor and glory from God the Father and a voice was borne to Him by the [splendid] Majestic Glory [in the bright cloud that overshadowed Him, saying], This is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased and delight,
18 We [actually] heard this voice borne out of heaven, for we were together with Him on the holy mountain.
19 And we have the prophetic word [made] firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through [the gloom] and the Morning Star rises ([j]comes into being) in your hearts.
20 [Yet] first [you must] understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is [a matter] of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving).
21 For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so—it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.
COMMENTS: – Peter is saying to you and me that our faith in Christ Jesus does not stand alone. That faith needs to be exercised. It means that faith needs to be put to work. In another way, or for a better example – Peter is saying, “Get your faith into action that brings visible results.”
You cannot have faith without works. Work qualifies the faith. Faith without works is useless to us, to God and to others. He said, “Employ every effort.” Let’s assume, you have a factory that produces finished products. You have got to make sure you secure raw material for the products. You have to employ workers or you do the work yourself to come out with the final product. You cannot faith the product out. If you have a farm, you need to get up, go into the farm, make ridges, get the seeds, plant the seeds, water the seeds, wait for it to grow, monitor it and when it is ready, harvest the seed and then you have a harvest that you can take to the market, share with others or for your home. You cannot faith the harvest out. We can’t faith the laborers either. That was why Jesus, the man who had all the faith in this world said these and did these .. in these texts below..
Matthew 9:35-38
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news (the Gospel) of the kingdom and curing all kinds of disease and every weakness and infirmity.
36 When He saw the throngs, He was moved with pity and sympathy for them, because they were bewildered (harassed and distressed and dejected and helpless), like sheep without a shepherd.
37 Then He said to His disciples, The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few.
38 So pray to the Lord of the harvest to [a]force out and thrust laborers into His harvest.
Look at what Jesus did. He went to all the cities and villages , teaching, proclaiming, healing and delivering people…He exercised His faith by working it out, on the harvest field. Also, check the last verse in 38. Pray the Lord of the harvest to force out and thrust out the laborers into the harvest – here again, even the prayer to ask God to force the laborers out to the harvest is work that needs to be engaged here as a consequence of the prayer.
Let’s go back to our text. It is possible to view this passage like an unfolding of faith. “Out of your faith will emerge goodness, and out of goodness will emerge understanding (of God and Others) , and out of your understanding (of God and Others) will emerge inner strength (self-control), and out of inner strength will emerge patient endurance (With God and Others), and out of patient endurance (with God and others) will emerge godliness, and out of godliness will emerge mercy toward your brothers and sisters, and out of mercy will emerge love” If our faith is not genuine, or if we fail to put our faith to work, none of the virtues will emerge.
It is also possible to view this passage as a mathematical equation. Lets see how it goes..
- Faith + goodness = Understanding
- Goodness + Understanding = Inner Strength
- Understanding +Inner Strength = Patience
- Inner Strength +Patience = Godliness
- Patience + Godliness = Mercy
- Godliness + Mercy = Love
Let me breakdown the first equation for you. If I have faith and I have goodness towards others, doing everything good for others the way Jesus or the Holy Spirit leads me to do, out of these acts will emerge relationship with others. As relationship emerges, I will begin to understand why people do what they do, specifically to those I am doing good for. But if I say I have faith and no goodness, no relationship with anyone, then how do I understand them. In understanding them, I also will understand God’s action towards men and women that while we were sinning and deep in sin, He sent His Son to come into our lives, into a relationship with us. In understanding us, He is making intercession for us right now beside the Father in Heaven.

Proverbs 3:3,4 Amplified Classic Edition
3 Let not mercy and kindness [shutting out all hatred and selfishness] and truth [shutting out all deliberate hypocrisy or falsehood] forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart.
4 So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man.

Proverbs 3:3-4
Common English Bible
3 Don’t let loyalty and faithfulness leave you.
Bind them on your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will find favor and approval
in the eyes of God and humanity.
If you take the word “mercy”, you cannot have mercy towards others until you have godliness and patience and those are dependent on earlier formulas like inner strength and understanding and the greatest of them all is love which also are dependent on the other formulas.
God is looking for people who are loyal, faithful and humble to work through and walk with. May He find us so doing in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
Peter says if we do all of this, we will not fall from the faith, we will remain steadfast, we will not be shortsighted and blind. It means if we do not have these virtues, it means we are blind, like the world around us who do not know Christ. Because the Spirit of Christ in us is like a seed, that need to grow to produce a harvest and if we do not put it to work, then we have no faith. We are like the unbelievers at heart. Jesus says by our fruits, we shall be known – whether we are His or not. ..read
Matthew 7:15-20
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves.
16 You will [a]fully recognize them by their fruits. Do people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 Even so, every healthy (sound) tree bears good fruit [[b]worthy of admiration], but the sickly (decaying, worthless) tree bears bad (worthless) fruit.
18 A good (healthy) tree cannot bear bad (worthless) fruit, nor can a bad (diseased) tree bear [c]excellent fruit [worthy of admiration].
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
20 Therefore, you will [d]fully know them by their fruits.

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
35 By this shall all [men ] know that you are My disciples, if you love one another [if you keep on showing love among yourselves ].
In conclusion of the letter, Peter says 10 Because of this, brethren, be all the more solicitous and eager to make sure (to ratify, to strengthen, to make steadfast) your calling and election; for if you do this, you will never stumble or fall.
11 Thus there will be richly and abundantly provided for you entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We can see from the above that a Christian cannot be lazy. There is serious work to do. In fact, the Spirit of Jesus will give us no rest until we do the needful because the harvest is plentiful and as long as Jesus is in You and me, we cannot relax. He will keep you and i awake until we do our part of being a laborer in the vineyard. Peter also concluded this part of the letter that everything He has said can be taken to the bank because He is a first witness to the account. These are not fables. They are believable and reliable words to depend on.
Now, Let’s Explore “How to counsel self and others concerning matters of Deception and Dishonesty
DECEPTION AND DISHONESTY
DEFINITION: Deception and dishonesty refer to misleading someone and deliberately making them believe things that are not true. Bearing false witness against someone, cheating, and lying are synonyms.
FACTS ABOUT DECEPTION AND DISHONESTY:
Examples of deception and dishonesty include lying in business dealings, in relationships, cheating on tests or in financial matters, and deliberate misrepresentation of the facts.
Deception and dishonesty are common in politics and governments. Unscrupulous leaders say what you want to hear rather than tell the truth.
Deception is common in religion. There are many false teachers and cults that deceive multitudes of people around the world. The Apostle Paul warns: “I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people” (Romans 16:17-18).
Deception and dishonesty are sin. One of the ten commandments addresses “bearing false witness”, which means lying (Exodus 20:16). Leviticus 19:11 states clearly: “Do not lie. Do not deceive one another.” Jesus repeated this command in Matthew 15:19; 19:18, Mark 10:19; and Luke 18:20. The Apostle Paul emphasized it in Romans 13:9.
God hates lying. Bearing false witness and a lying tongue are listed in Proverbs 6:19 among the top things God hates.
Satan is the father of lies. Jesus told the sinful Pharisees: “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
Deception will increase in the end-times. The Apostle Peter warned about those who would scoff the Word of God and even say that the Lord was not going to return ((2 Peter 3:1-7). Timothy warns of “perilous times” in the last days, saying that men will be trucebreakers (dishonest) and that they will be “ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:17). He also warned that these untruthful men would follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Jesus repeatedly warned believers to be on guard, lest we be deceived in the end-times (Matthew 24:4). One of the main characteristics of the Antichrist in the end-times will be deception. He will work “lying wonders” through the power of Satan and will deceive many people (2 Thessalonians 2:7-11).
DEALING WITH DECEPTION AND DISHONESTY:
Deception and dishonesty are sin. If you have been lying and cheating, you must recognize it is sin. As with any sin, you must confess this to God and seek forgiveness.
Accept and act upon the truth of God’s Word. Ask God to put His Spirit of truth into your heart and mind (John 16:13). Put off the “old man” of sin which is corrupt and deceitful and put on the new self which is like God in true righteousness (Ephesians 4:22-23). Ask God to put a new heart within you, because bearing false witness comes from your heart (Matthew 15:18-19).
Ask forgiveness of those you have deceived. Be truthful and ask them to forgive you.
If you have a tendency to lie or deceive, make these verses your motto: “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3) and “Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips And from a deceitful tongue” (Psalm 120:2, NKJV).
If you have been lied to or deceived, forgive those responsible. Forgive them, but in the future deal with them as they are, not as you wish they were. Forgive, but unless they prove themselves to be trustworthy once again, do not place blind trust in them.
Ask God for the gift of discernment. This is a supernatural ability given by God to perceive the truth in any situation (1 Corinthians 12:10).
Immerse yourself in the Word of God. Feasting spiritually on the strong meat of the Word will enable you to discern between good and evil and truth and deception (Hebrews 5:12-14). The way to deal with deception is to learn the truth, then you will not be deceived.
WHAT GOD’S WORD SAYS ABOUT DECEPTION AND DISHONESTY:
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (Exodus 20:16)
Do not lie. Do not deceive one another. (Leviticus 19:11)
You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the Lord abhors. (Psalm 5:6)
Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. (Psalm 24:3-4)
Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. (Psalm 34:12-13)
You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. (Psalm 52:3)
But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you. (Psalm 55:23)
For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride.
(Psalm 59:12)
…the mouths of liars will be silenced. (Psalm 63:11)
No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence. (Psalm 101:7)
Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me through your law. (Psalm 119:29)
I hate and abhor falsehood but I love your law. (Psalm 119:163)
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips And from a deceitful tongue. (Psalm 120:2, NKJV)
Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. (Psalm 141:3)
There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. (Proverbs 6:16-19)
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. (Proverbs 11:3)
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. (Proverbs 12:19)
The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful. (Proverbs 12:22)
The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace. (Proverbs 13:5)
A truthful witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies. (Proverbs 14:5)
He whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. (Proverbs 17:20)
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
(Proverbs 19:1)
A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free. (Proverbs 19:5)
Better to be poor than a liar. (Proverbs 19:22)
Getting treasures by a lying tongue Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.
(Proverbs 21:6)
An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips. (Proverbs 24:26)
Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, For would you deceive with your lips?
(Proverbs 24:28)
Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor. (Proverbs 25:18)
Like a madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows is a man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I was only joking!” (Proverbs 26:18-19)
A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin. (Proverbs 26:28)
Keep falsehood and lies far from me. (Proverbs 30:7-8)
O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? (Jeremiah 5:3)
Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. (Jeremiah 9:5)
For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. (Matthew 12:37)
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. (Matthew 15:18-19)
…and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people (Matthew 24:11)
… Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)
O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, (Galatians 3:1, KJV)
You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? (Galatians 5:7)
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. (Ephesians 4:14-15)
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. (Ephesians 4:22-25)
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) (Ephesians 5:6-8)
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Colossians 3:9-10)
Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4)
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
(2 Thessalonians 2:9-12)
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. (1 Timothy 4:1-2)
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (Hebrews 5:12-14)
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. (2 Peter 2:1-3)
Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
(1 John 3:7-9)
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. (1 John 4:1-3)
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
