This is a beautiful copy of Lyra Germanica: The Christian Life, published by Longmans Green Reader & Dyer in 1868. It was translated from the German by Catherine Winkworth and illustrated by John Leighton, F.S.A., E. Armitage and F. Madox Brown.
Book size: Quarto, with 254pp.
The binding on this book is stunning, and was by Edmonds & Remnants, whose sticker appears at the lower rear paste down.
Highly ornate dark blue/green pebble cloth covered boards – decorative detail to boards and spine.
Externally in good condition – the boards have some rubbing to the extremities, and there is light shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine. There is a small nick in the cloth to the bottom rear joint. Some bumping to the edges and corners. Burgundy end papers, with what looks like a small oil stain at the front – the front free end paper is also partially detached (see photo). Beautifully illustrated throughout. The pages are nice and clean with only the occasional mark. All edges gilt. There is a strip of clear tape to the inner margin/gutter to the final leaf and to the inner margin of the rear end paper (see photo). The front and rear hinges have cracked slightly, making the spine feel slightly loose, though the binding remains tight and strong.
Overall a beautiful book.
This book is approx 23.5 cm x 17.5 cm and weighs 1.168kg without packaging.
