Essential Oil field hydraulics October 2015 – Paperback by Raphael S Awoseyin, PhD

From many points of view, pipelines offer a most convenient means of transporting fluids between two points. Their application can be readily appreciated in :

• Water supply and distribution
• Gas supply and distribution
• Crude oil gathering systems in the oil field
• Distribution of refined petroleum products from a refinery to district depots

Selection of sizes, materials, configuration and ancillaries for each pipeline are the responsibility of the Pipeline Engineer. Not only must he select the material for a situation, he must also determine the optimum size of pipeline. Often, the requirement is an upgrade of an existing system to accommodate increased demand. This requires appraisal of the existing system against the new demand and study of the effects of solution options on that system. For instance, can the existing 8″ diameter gas pipeline that supplies consumers in Trans Amadi district of Port Harcourt cope with the additional demand by a new glass factory in the district? If not, what are the effects of laying a new line in parallel with the existing one? Would a 6″ loopline do?

This monograph is a tutorial on fluid flow and the basic principles on which oil and gas pipeline sizing and capacity appraisals are based. It is not intended to be a textbook on fluid flow, and so does not go into the rigours of derivation of equations. Rather, it discusses the relevant principles, and presents the quantitative relationships which embody those principles.
