Jesu Oba by Pastor Caleb Atolagbe
STORY BEHIND THE ALBUM.
The Album Jesu Oba consists mainly of my Reggae songs. I have been in love with Reggae Music from the late 60s and early 70s when I started hearing songs by groups like Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff and later Bob Marley. I started learning the guitar in 1976.
I followed up with trying to compose songs. By the late seventies Reggae music was sweeping across Nigeria like a wild fire taking all the youth with it. I then thought it would be a great idea if I wrote a gospel song in Reggae since it was not popular at that time to write a christian song in the Reggae gendre.
A chance came when a group of christian law students in my University, the University of Ife (now known as Obafemi Awolowo University) were graduating and a brother asked me to sing a song at the Sending-forth fellowship.
I decided to write a song of my own as there was no Send-forth song that I knew. In writing the song, my mind went to asking the outgoing students to be good when they get to the outside word as that was the natural counseling.
I wrote the first line ” Be good……like the Messiah” And then the second line ”Be good like Isaiah” of course Jeremiah and other prophets with names like that flooded my mind as follow ups. I noticed the rhyming pattern and suddenly it occurred to me that since I wrote that they were good why not create a word to describe the good group of prophets whose names end in the AIAH sound. The word GOODAIAH pupped out of my mouth. That had to be the Holy Spirit at His work.
By 1982 I had finished with my law degree at the University of Ife and had gone to the Law School in Lagos for my one year Bar program. As I was settling down in Lagos, I got an audition invitation to join the group Known as the Light Bearers. At that time the Light Bearers was the biggest and most popular Gospel Music group in Nigeria. I became the lead singer for the group and altimately the lead song writer for the group. The group toured the length an breadth of Nigeria and later even toured Canada and the USA.
In1989 Bishop David Oyedepo moved to Lagos from Kaduna to start the Church now popularly known as Winners Chapel. Bishop Oyedepo and I have known each other in our Secondary School,(Government Secondary School Omu-Aran in Kwara State of Nigeria in the early 70s).We were both in the Executive of our Fellowship of Christian Student (FCS). So when I joined the Winners Chapel in 1989 it was only a matter of time when I was invited to be the Music Director of the church which rose to become the largest single congregation in Africa and second largest in the world by the mid 90s.
It was a great opportunity to serve in that area of ministry. It was an opportunity to also touch the lives of thousands of worshippers as I led them in worship not only in the church but also through some of our Studio recordings. That choir mininstered on same stage with some of the best choirs in the land and also with some of world great worship leaders like Ron Kenoly way back in 1994 arround the time Ron started coming to Nigeria.
