“There is a vast difference between being a Christian and being a disciple. The difference is commitment.

Motivation and discipline will not ultimately occur through listening to sermons, sitting in a class, participating in a fellowship group, attending a study group in the workplace or being a member of a small group, but rather in the context of highly accountable, relationally transparent, truth-centered, small discipleship units.

Disciples cannot be mass produced.

We cannot drop people into a program and see disciples emerge at the end of the production line. It takes time to make disciples. It takes individual personal attention. The effectiveness of one’s ministry is to be measured by how well it flourishes after one’s departure.

Discipling is an intentional relationship in which we walk alongside other disciples in order to encourage, equip, and challenge one another in love to grow toward maturity in Christ. This includes equipping the disciple to teach others as well.Every believer or inquirer must be given the opportunity to be invited into a relationship of intimate trust that provides the opportunity to explore and apply God’s Word within a setting of relational motivation, and finally, make a sober commitment to a covenant of accountability.”

Navigator’s Kingdom Impact in the Workplace: Coming Alongside Co-Workers – DISCIPLESHIP AT WORK:

ROB AND HIS SMALL GROUP.

 

Rob* asked God how He might use a man like him to put into practice what he’d been learning from a Bible study on discipleship called The Ways of the Alongsider, which we were processing with a church leadership team. Rob wanted to make a Kingdom difference in his world. The Lord focused his attention on the military environment where he worked.

 

Really? How? What would it look like?

“Leadership training,” that’s the initiative Rob told me he had on his heart to launch during off hours. “I’ll take them through a series of discipleship exercises.” Rob explained that it would be leadership training in the area of spiritual development. Rob ran the idea by the Colonel and received a thumbs-up.

Sure enough, a handful of men and women expressed interest in the study, which went wonderfully the first couple sessions. Yet sure enough, there was pushback.

 

“Isn’t this really a Bible study in disguise?”

 

Once again, Rob prayed. And the answer came: “Take it to the Colonel.” As he did, before he could even speak, the Colonel stated: “By the way, I ran that study by the chaplain, and he’s sanctioned it. You’re good to go.” Now, after months of small group meetings, Rob updated his church leadership team on the group and asked for continued prayers: “We’re still having our small group in the off-duty hours at work, and it’s going well! Recently we had five new people join us—two of whom have been heavy on my heart. God is so good and so faithful.

“I was flooded with engaging conversation after our last meeting,” Rob added, “and I am so grateful for the opportunity. Glory to God!”

Alongsiders: LIFE-ON-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP

 

Alongsiders are committed to making disciples one conversation and one relationship at a time.

JESUS WAS AN ALONGSIDER

Jesus intentionally ministered life-on-life with a select few. When the Lord invited His disciples to “be with him” (Mark 3:14), it meant joining the Lord in His life. Together, they went to social events and on walking expeditions. They enjoyed faith conversations, and shared in the joys and sorrows of ministry.

PAUL AS AN ALONGSIDER

The apostle Paul practiced a relational approach to ministry. Even though he often launched a church and moved on, he demonstrated a relational approach to ministry. From his example in the Thessalonian church, what can you observe about his relational approach?

• What do you think it meant for Paul to be like a mother or a father to this new group of believers?

YOU AS AN ALONGSIDER

• Who has God placed you alongside in your work, home, or play aspects of life? Is there someone in your spheres of relationship that you can come alongside and disciple?

 

An overview of how an alongsider structures discipleship.

 

The New Testament’s portrait of a disciple becomes the target you aim for in making disciples.

 

R: The R stands for relationships. A relationship with God and a relationship with those whom we disciple provide the appropriate context for the disciplemaking process.

 

2D: There is always an open Bible between an alongsider and the person he or she is discipling. Around this open Bible, discovery and discussion (2D) take place.

3A: Discipleship includes application, accountability, and affirmation. Alongsiders are on an application journey. Accountable relationships encourage follow-through. Affirmation encourages people to keep going.

Conclusion and prayer.

In our Christian race, the call to discipleship or disciple making is the core of the matter. Everything else rises and falls to the level of our commitment to discipleship or disciple making. That is the last command to us by Christ Jesus and we must of necessity make it of utmost priority. The way to be committed to disciple making is to make one.!

God has placed us where we are for a reason, for a purpose and for a time such as this. Are we ready to partner with Him to reach souls for Him or are we ready to focus on me, myself and I? May He find us faithful and commitment to the work of discipleship as we work with resources ( human and material) the Lord has placed alongside us.

Thank you Lord for helping us by Your grace to make disciples as you have commanded. Help us to be willing as You provide the needed grace and opportunities for discipleship in Jesus name, amen
