The Ugly face of Corruption In Nigeria Is there a Way Out? – Paperback – Yusufu Turaki
Corruption! Corruption!! Corruption!!! Wherever you turn people are talking about corruption. Corruption is prevalent in society. It is seen in the high corridors of power, among the movers and shakers of society, it is present in business; it is also present among the so-called “common” people.

What is corruption?

Corruption has been defined in many ways.

A simple definition given in the Oxford dictionary is, “widespread moral deterioration.”

The classic definition, followed by the World Bank and Transparency International, views corruption as “the use of one’s public position for illegitimate private gains.”

Information International based in Lebanon adopted the following definition:

“Corruption is the behavior of private individuals or public officials who deviate from set responsibilities and use their position of power in order to serve private ends and secure private gains.” (Lebanon Anti-Corruption Initiative Report 1999).

The UN’s Global Programme against Corruption defines corruption as the “abuse of power for private gain” and includes thereby both the public and private sector.

Expanded Definition

Etymologically the word “corruption” comes from the Latin verb “corruptus” meaning (to break); it literally means a broken object. Conceptually, corruption is a form of behavior, which deviates from ethics, morality, tradition, law and civic virtue.

Abuse of power and personal gain can and do occur in both the public and private domains and often in collusion with individuals from both sectors. Although perceived differently from country to country, corruption tends to include the following behaviors: conflict of interest, embezzlement, fraud, bribery, political corruption, nepotism, extortion, etc.

Biblical Quest for Men and Women of Integrity

The Bible as God’s Word is totally against any form of corruption and calls for men and women of integrity, character, honesty, faithfulness, etc.

“Lord! Help! Godly men are fast disappearing. Where in all the world can dependable men be found? Every one deceives and flatters and lies. There is no sincerity left. But the Lord will not deal gently with people who act like that; he will destroy those proud liars who say, ‘We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own; who can stop us?’

The Lord replies, ‘I will arise and defend the oppressed, the poor, the needy.
