In “Hearts of Steel” we finally get a deeper look at Liam’s story, and the person he has become after being reunited with his family after decades apart. Also, Maggie is quite a different heroine than the others in this series have been, as she comes from a poverty-stricken family rather than the Blackstone clan.

I never cease to be amazed by this author’s ability to meld together fascinating, sometimes obscure history, with lifelike characters and an engaging story. And, it was quite interesting that the villain of this story was actually a real historical figure. I read the historical note in the back of the book before reading the novel, and I would encourage you to do the same. It was amazing to know that this character and many of his actions were actually real. I admire how seamlessly this was incorporated into an otherwise fictional story.

I was pleased to see the growth of Liam’s faith throughout the novel. While it was inspiring to see him fight to be a better man and live up to the legacy of his father, I also would have appreciated more reminders of our Heavenly Father, and that true redemption comes only through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Liam’s story has spread throughout all three books of this series, and not only is “Hearts of Steel” a conclusion to his tumultuous tale, but it is also a compelling conclusion to “The Blackstone Legacy.
