Seeing That Transforms
God’s pattern for building his temple in this generation is not a drawing but a person, the person of Jesus Christ. He is the one in whom God is well pleased. God’s pleasure has prospered in his hands.
Learning crucial lessons from the pattern of priesthood of Jesus is the burden for the year 2006 clergy retreat which was on the theme, Behold My Servants. It held at Bethany Resorts, KM 21, Yande Boko Alede Road, Boko, Benue State, Nigeria between Monday 16 and Thursday 19, October 2006.
There are so many issues that God may be wanting to confront us with in the course of our sitting together in this meeting. While there are several issues and needs that we will be lifting up to God in order for him to address and minister to us, we have come to realize that God is taking the clergy onto a place of divine visitation. We sense very deeply in our hearts that we are at the threshold of a divine outburst.
As you see the Lord blending and binding our hearts together, regardless of all our denominational groupings, you see the Holy Ghost doing something particularly in our lives and in our midst. God is going somewhere and as we continue to pray and to seek the face of God, what he will have us do in the clergy retreat this year, it became very clear and it looked very urgent when we saw that God is wanting to show us his Son again. It became a very pertinent issue when the Lord began to say, behold my servant.
If we are not going to miss the divine approval that God is holding to us, holding out for our lives and for our ministries, especially within the tenure that God has put you at the ends of affairs in the various dioceses, in the various districts and in the various regional councils where God has made you leaders, then the need to look unto Jesus becomes a very crucial one. And tonight, all I intend just to do is to welcome you, but while we welcome ourselves and we get to interact and get to go and relax, there are a few issues that I felt God will have us to look at when he said, behold my servant, behold my servant. Now we are not going to endeavour tonight to start looking at it from the book of Isaiah where God is going to be showing us several peculiar things about Jesus that made him who he is.
But I have seen God wanting to point Jesus to us very deliberately from the book of Matthew chapter 3 and the book of Matthew chapter 6, 17. Now I would like to begin by drawing your attention to what is it that we make God to suddenly, in the two passages that we read in the book of Matthew, there was something about suddenly a voice came from heaven. Have you noticed that? That in Matthew chapter 3 they say suddenly there was a voice from heaven and what does the voice say? This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.
Then in chapter 17, while Jesus Christ took his disciples to the mount and as he prayed, the Bible said he was transfigured before their eyes, his visage changed and he started glistening like the sun. I couldn’t imagine the kind of glory that was beginning to break forth around Jesus. Here were the disciples that had been with him.
Imagine that somebody like John would put his head on the bosom of Jesus. Imagine that they slept together and they ate together and in the chapter earlier, chapter 16, Jesus had taken them to Caesarea Philippi in a village and he had asked them, whom do men say that I the son of man am? Do you remember? And they said some say you are Elijah, another one say you are one of the prophets, another one say you are this, you are that, you are this, you are that. You can imagine Jesus.
He was in the midst of his disciples and it was amazing that they also didn’t even know whom they have. Can you imagine? They were eating with him, they were sleeping with him, they were traveling with him, they were hearing him, they were listening to his teaching but they’ve not known him. They’ve not seen the man they carry.
They’ve not seen the glory that is dwelling among them and when Peter said thou art the Christ, the son of the living God, Jesus said Simon, son of Jonas, flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, only my father that is in heaven. But you see at the end of that discussion, he said, and there are some of you standing here, that you will not taste death until you see the son of man in his glory. And then 6 days after, 6 days after, he took them to this man.
As if he just wanted, you know, in my village, we normally do a yearly festival of masquerades. And you know sometimes, you know, masquerades, when they are coming out, they come out so fierce, they come out, you know, and they have different kind of outlook. And when the masquerade is coming, everybody is running and they will say, yes, it’s coming directly from heaven.
Everybody is running, everybody, and my father used to carry one of the fearful masquerades. And you know, I had grown up, I never knew he was the one inside the masquerade. I never knew.
When this masquerade is coming, everybody will be running. They will call him as if, as if they are calling a spirit. And when they call him and the thing becomes so serious, then he say, mmm, mmm, mmm, everybody will run, everybody.
So one day as this masquerade was coming out, not knowing it was my father inside it, everybody was running, was running, was running, was running, was running. And I was also running. And I don’t know what has happened, maybe I tripled and I fell and the masquerade called me by my name.
I said, ah! And I was so afraid I was going to run away and he called me, he said, he called me, ah! I said, this masquerade, why is he speaking as if he is my father like this? So when the masquerade went and undressed and Baba came, I saw his eyes red, he was sweating. I said, inside that masquerade somebody spoke like you, somebody spoke like you. Now, when I realized that it was my father, my attitude changed to the masquerade.
When the masquerade is, I will be so bold I can’t stand there. I said, I know he will not step on me. Now, what was I looking at? It appears as if when God wants to grant you a greater access to himself, you have when he wants to give man, even from the Old Testament or through to the New Testament, all those who discharge any special specific ministry for God, he did something to them. He took them aside. You know, before I used to think that when God wants to make a man great, What God will give him is power.
But I found that those who actually ministered in the power of God, it was not power that they received. It was that God took them aside. Like that masquerade.
And what did do? He unveiled himself. He unveiled himself to them. He, he seemed to remove something from his face that they might see him.
And as they saw a glimpse of him, a glimpse of his glory, something rested on their lives that is beyond explanation. Do you know that when God wanted to raise Moses, all of you, you remember Moses, do you remember Moses? What baffled me was that this same Moses had been chased out of the land of Egypt because they said, who made you a leader and a ruler over us? And having…

Concept of discipleship
Shall we pray? Our Father, we bless and honor your name for this opportunity we have. Believing you that your purpose might come to pass and be established in each of our lives as we listen, as we discuss, as we share together from this point.
Father, we are trusting you that as we open scriptures today to discuss this very important matter, which is very, very important in your heart for us, the question of discipleship. Lord, you might open our eyes and not only for us to know, but that we might become disciples indeed. Thank you, Lord, for hearing us, for we are prayed in Jesus’ name.
Amen. We thank God for every one of you. Having looked into scriptures and having prayed, we believe that God will want us at a time like this to consider a very paramount question in God’s heart for every believer, the question of discipleship.
Today, we are going to be looking at what is the meaning of discipleship, who is a disciple, and what is God’s ultimate, what is God’s goal in making us Christians at all. Now, we want to begin our discussion by looking at the great commission that the Lord Jesus Christ gave. And the reason why we want to start from there is for you to see the importance our Master attached to this question of discipleship, even when he was sending out the twelve to go and preach the gospel.
Now, if you look at the book of Matthew chapter 18, I mean chapter 28, Matthew 28, I’ll read first of all from King James and then read from Revised Standard Version for your clearer understanding. Matthew 28 verse 18, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.
And, Lord, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Now, looking at it from King James Version, you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ was very, very definite in this commission.
And he has a purpose in mind for putting it the way it has been put in scriptures like this. He said, Go ye therefore and teach all nations. Now, you realize that the commission is much more than to impress all nations.
It’s much more than just to exhibit some good, good things to all nations. His purpose is that whosoever will come into the family of God must have been taught with a view of becoming something that God will soon reveal to us. Now, I want you to check that same scripture from Revised Standard.
Revised Standard says, And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And, Lord, I am with you always, to the close of the age.
Now, we realize here that Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Now, we realize that God is having a very serious purpose such that even when we go to preach, when we organize crusades, when we give an evangelistic sermon, the purpose of God is not just to impress people, is not just to save people, is not just to make them, is not just to heal their bodies, but his desire is that they might become disciples.
Now, so from here, we want to look at what is disciple? Who is a disciple? And what is discipleship entirely? Now, you will realize, I want us to quickly look at Luke chapter 6. Luke chapter 6, and I consider it from verse 40. Luke chapter 6 and verse 40, we find a very small definition of who a disciple is, or what is the purpose of discipleship. And as we discuss that, we are trusting that God will give you insight onto this matter.
Luke chapter 6, and I read it from verse 40. King James says, The disciple is not above his master, but everyone that is perfect shall be as his master. The disciple is not above his master, but everyone that is perfect shall be as his master.
Let’s look at that from some other simpler versions. God helping us. Now, we realize from Revised Standard, it says, A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone, when he is fully taught, will be like his teacher.
New English Bible puts it like this. It says, A disciple, a pupil, is not superior to his teacher, but everyone, when his training is complete, will reach his teacher’s level. Now, we realize that the question of who a disciple is, or
discipleship, is God’s own program, or a program whereby somebody willingly offers himself to be trained, or to be taught under a teacher, or under a master, with a view of that person becoming like his master.
Now, from the scripture, we already said, A disciple is never above his master, but everyone that is perfect, and the word perfect there means after he has been fully taught, or after his training is complete. So, we realize that discipleship is a course of training, with a view of making a person to become like the master. Now, but one thing we notice here is that the person to be trained must willingly accept to be trained.
Now, that’s what we are saying. Now, so the question of discipleship is not a once and for all experience. It’s not something that can happen to you right now, and after now it will finish.
No, it’s a course of event. It’s a series of dealings that will come upon your life with a clear focus, and that focus is to make you like the master. Now, so in the case that we are dealing with here, we are talking about becoming disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It means that we learn to become like Jesus in every aspect of our lives, that at the end when we are fully trained, so I want you to know the word fully there, it means it’s a process that can be completed. It’s a process that somebody also can abandon in the middle of the way, and when the training has not been well completed, or when it has not been full, then we don’t expect the same kind of result. What is the result? The result is that the pupil or the disciple, so here we find that various versions help us to understand the word disciple.
A disciple is a pupil. Another version says it’s a student. Another version says a disciple is a pupil.
A disciple can be a student or a learner. We are accepted to learn under a teacher. Now, so when the Bible says we should go and make disciples of all nations, it means that the Lord Jesus Christ is expecting something, and we are going to read that also from another scripture to help us understand why must we make disciples of all nations, and what is God’s purpose in discipleship.
What is God’s ultimate? But I want you to understand first that discipleship is a course of events, is a process that can be completed, and when it is completed, the result is clear. The result is that the Master will have been reproduced in the learner, and in this case, the discipleship we are talking about is becoming a disciple of the Lord Jesus. It means we are talking of a process

Fear Not, I Will Make You
The passages I want to study with you tonight, they are not going to be studied, just an announcement that I heard God asking me to share with you. Isaiah chapter 41, you may have heard me speak about Isaiah 41, but again tonight, I heard the Holy Spirit saying, that’s what I’m about doing.
That’s what I’m about doing. That’s what I want to do. So, turn to Isaiah 41.
Every one of you, if you have your Bible, Isaiah 41. Even though we will use Isaiah 41 as anchor, you will find such words all over the scripture, pointing at something in the heart of God. I’ll just read this, and I will say one or two things about them, and we shall pray.
Isaiah 41. Isaiah 41. I only want to read verse 14, verse 15, verse 16, up to verse 20.
14 to 20. Fear not, thou warm Jacob, and ye men of Israel, I will help you, says the Lord, and your Redeemer, the only one of Israel. Behold, I will make you a new sharp threshing instrument, having teeth.
Thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shall make the hills as chaff. Thou shalt farm them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the wild wind shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the Lord, and shall glory in the only one of Israel.
When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue fails for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the sheetar tree, and the metu and the oy tree. I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together, that they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this, and the only one of Israel has created it. Amen.
Amen. The first thing that I would like you to mark, I want you to mark it as we look at the world tonight, and as we take our bearing, it is the repeated use of the personal pronoun that God himself was using throughout the scripture. I will help you.
I will make a new sharp instrument out of you. I the Lord, I will hear them. I the Lord, the God of Israel will not forsake them.
I will open rivers. I will plant. So first and foremost I want to say to you, that even before you ever know, and before you even begin to know how to pray, there is a divine commitment over your life.
God is committed about what he wants to do with you. You are coming into this meeting, and the way the Spirit of God may have ordered your step over some past few years, they are all indications of the commitment of God to make something out of your life. So my first submission to you tonight is that concerning the issues that God will be raising, concerning God making agents for transformation out of you, God is committed.
God is committed to make something out of nothing. God is committed to produce out of your life what pleases him. God is committed, and it is this commitment of God that gives me boldness.
Boldness. Boldness to invite you. Boldness to ask you whatever it requires, come.
Because I know God will make something out of your life in the name of Jesus Christ. You are not going to end like ordinary smoke. You are not just going to dissipate into the thin air.
Something will come out of your life in the name of Jesus Christ. Brothers, listen, listen carefully. If it was a man that said, I will do it.
In fact, even if it is yourself that were to say, I will change. I will make myself something. I will serve God.
I will not believe you. In fact, there is nothing about that. Because what is a man that he will say something and it will come to pass.
Many people have good intentions in their heart. They are dead. Their intentions cannot see the light of day.
Because there are so many, many variables unknown to a man that frustrates his good intentions. There are many things you decided that you will do. You didn’t know that there are other things that will stop it or will scatter it.
And you have ideas. You say, oh, how I wish, how I wish, how I wish. Whenever I hear anyone say, how I wish, I say it’s human, it’s natural.
Human beings will always wish. They will always wish, I wish I’m this. I wish I’m there.
I wish I did this. I wish I achieved this. No, no, no.
That’s what human beings are all about. But I want to thank God that he who is speaking is the Lord. He said, I will make you.
May I inform you that in that scripture, I hear God saying, I will make you. I will make you. I will make you.
When God said, I will make you, you know what that means? Everything he takes. Everything that it will cost God. Everything that is needed to make you.
He said, I will make you. Do you understand the meaning of that? Whatever power he needs, he will employ it. Whatever resources he needs, he will engage it.
He said, I will make you. May I tell you tonight that he who says he will make you is able to make you. Is he able to make you? He will do it.
He will do it. That’s the first thing I want to note. The second thing I want you to know.
Before I talk about, so what are you supposed to do? I want you to know. That what you are going to become will be a miracle. Shout Hallelujah.
You will be a miracle to your generation. What God will make you will not be commensurate with who you are. You see, if a man becomes what people think he can become, there is no surprise about that.
Oh God, you are not hearing me. If you become what everybody already knows that you have capacity to become. We know him now, we know that’s what he will be now.
But I want you to see God. Speaking in verse 14, he said, fear not. You worm.
Worm Jacob. Worm. How can a worm become a sharp threshing instrument that will thresh mountains? I don’t know whether you are following me.
How can a worm, spineless worm. Worm that had no bone. I don’t know how to get the right word for worm in English.
Am I speaking correct English? Is the worm the right word for worm in English? Because in my language it’s echo low. I hope somebody can help me. What is echo low, what is echo low please? Eh? Earthworm.
That worm that when you see it on the ground, if you want to kill it, you don’t need to go and get cutlass. What do you do? You just use your leg like this, finish. If not that it is unhygienic, you just use your finger nail, you cut it.

God’s Fountain For Your Restoration
Isaiah Chapter 40 Comfort ye my people, says your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her that her warfare is ended.
That her iniquity is pardoned. For you shall receive of the Lord’s hand double for all your sins. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, cry unto her that her warfare is ended.
Your warfare is ended. Your struggle is ended. Those things that you traveled with and traveled and wrestled with, they have come to an end by this day in the name of Jesus Christ.
It is the day that God has ordained in order to bring His people into a new dimension of His purpose. And so we can only start this meeting tonight by announcing to you, this is the day that the Lord has made. Please tell somebody by your side, this is the day, this is the day.
This is the day that the Lord has designated. It’s a new day for you. It’s a new day for me.
It’s a new day in the purpose of God. It’s a new day in the history of Nigeria and of the nations. It’s a new day in the life of the church.
It’s a new day, it’s a new day. It’s a new day, it’s a new day. I will read furthermore what has God said about this day.
Let me begin by reading Hebrews chapter 4. Hebrews chapter 4, I read from verse 4. For he spoke in a certain place of the serving day on this wise. And God did rest the serving day from all his works. And in this place again, if they shall enter into my rest.
Saying therefore, it remains that some will enter therein. And they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief. Again, again.
He limited a certain day. And I would like to check the word limited from other versions there. But he said again, he has designated another day.
Saying in David. Today, after so long a time. As it is said today.
If you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remained therefore a rest to the people of God.
God has designated. He has set another day. A day in which to bring his people into their rest.
When this day was preached. To those early fathers. They could not enter into the rest.
The Bible said because of their unbelief, because of disobedience. But after so long a time. After so long a time when many, many things have happened.
Many, many difficulties have happened. God still saw that there is need for some people to enter into their rest. And he has set up another day.
A day to enter into his rest. A day to stop struggling. A day to experience the grace and the power of God.
A day for Jesus to again in mercy. Stretch forth his hand to as many as are willing to come. And I wish to announce to you.
We have come into another day. Maybe many years ago. God gave you opportunity to experience him.
Maybe several years ago. God in mercy drew you. But somehow, somehow. You missed it. Somehow, somehow. You slipped.
It slipped out of your hand. And for several years. You’ve only roamed
around in life.
You’ve tried and struggled with different things. And it never really fitted
again. And it appears as if that’s how your years and your life would end.
I have a good news for you tonight. God has designated another day.
Another day of opportunity.
Another day of deliverance. Another day of divine visitation. Another day
to experience God again.
Another day for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I’ll read Zechariah 13.
All of these, once I finish reading them.
I suppose you’ll be ready to take your response as we enter this meeting. In that day, there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David. And to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
For sin and for uncleanness. This day, there’s a fountain opened. That fountain, it is for cleansing.
It is to take away every stain of sin. Every blemish. Every mistake that you have made in life.
Everything that has settled on your conscience. That has tied you, you couldn’t do much. It was a silly mistake, you called it.
But the effect had been so devastating for many years. And maybe you went here and there. Looking for how to get out of it.
But here today. He said in that day, there shall be a fountain opened. There’s a fountain opened.
And I’m just telling you that there is no level. No level of sin. No dimension of iniquity.
No gravity of misbehavior. That can stop you from getting into this provision that God has made today. He said in that day, there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David.
A fountain is opened to us. And I just felt God say, speak comfortably to my people. Tell them that instead of their iniquity, I have decided to render double to them.
Speak comfortably to my people that their warfare has ended. A fountain is opened. It’s opened to you.
And it’s opened to dissolve every sin. And to take away every uncleanness. He said, it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord of Hosts.
That I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land. And they shall no more be remembered. And also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirits to pass out of the land.
Shout Hallelujah. All those unclean spirits. All those activities of the power of darkness.
That have been intermingling with the purpose of God. And with the destiny of many lives. They shall be cut off out of the land in the name of Jesus Christ.
He said, I will cause that the names of those idols will never be remembered again. Those things that were the idols. They were the things that stood between you and the Saviour.
They shall not be remembered again in the name of Jesus Christ. We have entered into a new day. A day of cleansing.
A day in which God has decided to turn His face in mercy upon Zion. Whenever God declares a day. There is only one small thing.
That is required of all those who hear it. When Hebrews chapter 4 said. Those to whom it was first preached.
They could not enter. Because of what? Unbelief. What they had did not mix with faith in their hearts.
And so they went back into their wilderness. Not because there is no provision for their deliverance. But because they did not respond in faith.
The fountain was opened. And God is saying. Come in.
Just dip yourself here. It will be alright. You remember Naaman.
How many of you remember Naaman? The major general of the army of
Syria. Who had fought many battles for his master. And he is the chief of army staff in Syria.
Actually he is the next person in command to the president or the king of Syria. But he was a leper. And there was a slave girl in the house.
Which they captured when they raided Israel. And this girl was doing menial service in the house. And sometimes she is sleeping.
And one day she mistakenly stumbled at the chief, the general. Removing the socks. The girl has wondered.
Why does a guy wear socks day and night? Every time you meet a guy he is wearing gloves. Only when he was going to take his bath secretly. That’s when he removed the socks and the gloves.
But this day the girl was just doing her normal job. Only to discover that general Naaman had removed socks. And the girl saw the man’s leg.
His feet completely white. The toes were almost gone. The man was a leper.
You know in the country of Israel, if you are a leper, no matter your position, your ranking, the day they discover you are a leper, you are relocated. Where do they relocate a leper to? Outside the camp. But in Syria, lepers, they can occupy high positions.
In Syria, lepers, they are highly celebrated. Because they are perfected in hypocrisy. They wear gloves over their hands that are cut off.
They wear socks over their toes that have been cut off. They wear very thick, thick, thick underwear to cover the patches so that nobody will know. Oh, this girl couldn’t talk to general.

Ministering Word Effectively
You are about listening to a teaching titled Ministering the Word of God effectively by Brother Bile Akanin. This teaching was given at a workshop held for pastors and ministers of God’s Word. The outline used at the workshop is available on request.
For further inquiries or counsel, contact Peace House Tapes, PO Box 971, Boko, Benue State, Nigeria. God bless you. For the church to be sanctified is the means of the world.
We are here for a workshop on God’s Word. I want you to pray personally. Allow me, Lord, to see your Word.
Allow me, Lord, to encounter your Word. Grant me the privilege of encountering your Word. Take me with your Word.
We are going to be talking things that look technical. Yet, we need help. That the Holy Spirit will grant us entry into the ministry of God’s Word.
We talk about God’s Word from time to time, but we need help from heaven. That that Word will become life each time we handle it. Don’t forget the Bible says, Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman, and need not be ashamed.
Handling the Word of Truth, dividing the Word of Truth, faithfully and truthfully. In Jesus Christ’s name we pray. Our Father, we want to come before your presence.
We want to believe you for our help this evening. We want you, Lord, to assist us. We know that it’s your purpose to raise men.
Men that we can look for you concerning them. And they will not mishandle your trust. So, Father, we want to pray that beyond our human ability, you will help us today.
Father, we ask that you will particularly grant unto us your own understanding. And that, Lord, no matter how brief this meeting is, you will cause it to be eternal in impact. Eternal in its effect.
And, Lord, out of this brutal meeting, there will arise men who could handle the Word of God for effectiveness, even for revival. Lord, we are trusting that all that you’ve shown to us, we will commit it unto faithful men. That no
day or so we will find a trust being committed to their lives to pass it across to others.
Thank you, Father. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Praise the Lord. There are three major parts to it. But we have concluded that there’s no way we can go through the whole outline today.
So we have decided that we’ll just take a section out of it all. And we’ll be dealing with the last section. I wish we could, we can take a little of section B on finding the Word for ministry.
And then looking at imparting the Word of God. So, what I’d like to go through the general introduction, so that all of you can understand where we’re coming from. We’re saying that God’s major instrument of ministry, apart from the human vessel, which is the minister, is the Word of God.
There are two things. What are these two things? The minister and then the Word. And everything that God has ever done, anywhere, right from beginning unto this present moment that we are talking about, God does all His work by His Word.
