On Sunday, March 5, 2023, the Right Reverend Frank Griswold III passed away, leaving behind a legacy of profound spiritual teaching and care. He served as the 25th presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1998 to 2006. During his years as presiding bishop, Griswold served as cochair of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission and was a member of various ecumenical and interfaith boards and institutes. He notably worked to establish full communion between the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In his later years, he continued to teach, write, lead retreats, and exercise a ministry of spiritual direction both nationally and internationally. The Book of Ruth, available now, is the newest book in the series that explores the human and divine love at the center of the narrative as well as the book’s relevance to Christian theology. Peter H. W. Lau upholds the series’ standard of quality. The Book of Ruth includes detailed notes on the translation and pays careful attention to the original Hebrew and the book’s historical context, all the while remaining focused on Ruth’s relevance to Christian readers today. An indispensable resource for pastors, scholars, students, and all readers of Scripture, Lau’s commentary is the perfect companion to one of the most beloved …
ofollow”> Anthony C. Thiselton, 1937–2023 My first encounter with Professor Thiselton had taken place at Wheaton College in 1980 or 1981. As an undergraduate philosophy major, I attended the annual philosophy conferences that Arthur Holmes used to organize, bringing such luminaries as Nicholas Wolterstorff, Alvin Plantinga, and George Mavrodes to campus year after year to deliver lectures that mostly soared right over the heads of relative beginners like me. One year the theme was hermeneutics, so of course (because The Two Horizons had just been published) Dr. Holmes invited Prof. Thiselton, and, miraculously Prof. Thiselton was able to accept. He was not a regular participant, so he was unaware of the usual level of the papers. When he stood to speak, …

ofollow”> In a world full of suffering, the declaration that God wants us to be joyful can sound tone-deaf at best or hypocritical at worst. In An Invitation to Joy, Daniel J. Denk invites readers to cast off hopelessness and rediscover joy. Yet, as Denk reminds us, “we don’t find joy by pursuing joy; we find it by pursuing something else,” namely, the kingdom of God. This joy is not naive optimism but a profound sense of purpose and peace. While caring for his beloved wife in her final days, author Daniel shared wisdom of holding onto joy in the midst of suffering. Sharon Denk has since passed, but her legacy of joy lives on through the life of her …
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Matthew 21:6-9 Palm Sunday ushers in Holy Week where we remember Jesus’ journey to the cross ending the week honoring Good Friday and celebrating his resurrection on Easter Sunday. This Holy …
ofollow”> In Trauma-Informed Evangelism, Charles Kiser and Elaine Heath aim to recover the God of love from the structures of hate that pervade Christian communities in America today. Over the course of their study, Kiser and Heath amplify the voices of those who suffered misogynistic, racist, or homophobic abuse at the hands of the church. While carefully listening to these stories, Kiser and Heath bring them into conversation with the passion and resurrection of Jesus. Engaging with womanist and liberation theology, they see in the crucifixion a God who does not valorize suffering but shares the experience of the traumatized. Below you will find a thoughtful exploration of the importance of this conversation today, written by Charles Kiser, and an …

As a new parent, West grapples with his own fragmented recovery and grief for the friends he lost to addiction, asking if anyone can really change, or if we are always bound to repeat the past. Echoing the form of a traditional Anglican Christmas service of stories and songs, West’s lyrical prose invites readers into an unorthodox rendition of the liturgy called Lessons and Carols. Read an excerpt from West’s unique memoir, Lessons and Carols below. PROLOGUE The past unfolds into the present like a flower opening its petals, revealing its gold-dusted …
the-prosperity-gospel/” title=”A Glimpse into the Prosperity Gospel” rel=”nofollow”> In 1946, God gave the-rise-of-the-prosperity-gospel.aspx”>Oral Roberts a new Buick. And this is just one of many miracles the young, broke preacher learned to expect, as Oral Roberts would go on to build an evangelistic ministry worth millions of dollars, a medical complex, and a university. How do we interpret the life of a man who seemed to combine rampant consumerist excess with a sincere devotion to the gospel? In the-rise-of-the-prosperity-gospel.aspx”>Oral Roberts and the Rise of the Prosperity Gospel, Jonathan Root weaves together accounts of Oral Roberts’s life in a balanced and engaging narrative, paying special attention to how Roberts introduced the “prosperity gospel” to American Protestants with his affirmation that God intends his followers to be both spiritually and …
Arthur Boers’s earliest memory was of shattered glass. His father threw a potted plant at his mother, and she ducked as the plant crashed through a window of the family home. His mother cleaned up the shards that day; later in life, he would find himself called upon to pick up the pieces as well. In Shattered, Boers reflects on coming of age in a family scarred by violence. The son of Dutch immigrants, Boers illuminates the generational trauma of the Nazi occupation of Holland, refracted in vignettes of his boyhood in postwar Canada. His hard-working, Calvinist family is endearing, but ultimately unable or unwilling to address the insidious cycle of abuse that passed father to son. Breaking with …

What People Are Saying “If you want to learn more about the evangelical fascination with the rapture, Israel, the antichrist, and the prophetic books of the Bible, The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism is the place to start.” —John Fea, distinguished professor of history, Messiah University and author of Believe Me: The Evangelical Road to Donald Trump Library Journal (starred review) “This is …
